The Cretto in Gibellina (Trapani) is one of Alberto Burri's most impressive works. Begun in 1985, it consists of a 1.5-meter-high white concrete layer covering the rubble of the old center of Gibellina, destroyed by the Belice earthquake in 1968. The large cracks that run across the surface reproduce the layout of the town's streets, transforming the ruins into a permanent scar and a powerful symbol of collective memory. Construction of the work was interrupted in 1989, the year in which Carlo Orsi documented its status and construction phases; it was then completed in 2015, on the centenary of Burri's birth, according to the original design. Covering more than 86,000 square meters, the Cretto is a Gesamtkunstwerk, capable of combining historical tragedy and aesthetic reflection.
